Qualcomm, manufacture of the world’s most used chip when it comes to smartphones, has announced another, the Snapdragon 821. The company has however stated that it is not that much of an upgrade from the previous Snapdragon 820, but has improved features.
Qualcomm says that its Snapdragon 820 chip has been a success, with ‘over 115 premium smartphone and tablet device deployments, supporting the latest in cutting-edge mobile applications, and helping create more immersive user experiences while also being deployed in new and innovative ways, like supporting safer driving and navigation in cars.’
The 821 is not meant to outdo the performance of the 820 chip, but complement it, adding 10% performance increase over the 820 with the Qualcomm Kryo quad-core CPU, reaching speeds up to 2.4GHz, more than the 820’s 2.15GHz.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 ‘helped improve the user experience for mobile imaging, virtual reality, battery life, and connectivity speed and reliability, all the updates we’ve included in Snapdragon 821 will help keep devices powered by Snapdragon 800 premium-tier processors at the top of people’s shopping lists into the foreseeable future.’
“We’re excited to tell you more about just how the Snapdragon 821 will help set a new bar for smartphones, tablets, mobile VR head mounted displays and other new devices. You can expect commercial devices powered by the 821 in the second half of 2016.”
So, what phones do you know that have the 820 chip? Some are Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, Xiaomi Mi5, LG G5, HTC 10 and Sony Xperia X.
