5G Network May Become A Reality For The ‘Internet of Things’

In Zambia, 4G/LTE network access is still not as vast and is not even being provided by some internet service providers (ISPs), but the advanced world is already on to the next big thing, 5G broadband connectivity. It’s fast, but try read this slowly.

Companies like Ericsson, Samsung and Huawei are already working on developing it. There are estimates that over a 100 billion devices may be connected to the internet by the year 2020, that’s only 5 years from now!

According to a report by Business Insider, Huawei is working with 3 South Korean mobile operators to come up with 5G networks.

5G networks are expected to be about a 1000 times faster than 4G, can you imagine that. Ofcourse not, we don’t even have proper 4G here. Think of how long it takes you to download a movie for example, you probably go and do other things while it downloads right? Now think of that same movie downloaded in less than a minute. Awesome!

We don’t have to get into details but a brief outline of how it will work is that it will be obviously more advanced. The challenge will be to have it work on the same bandwidth that allow 3G and 4G to work on as well as. There will be a need to increase the bandwidth, or even use a different frequency for 5G. It’s too early to say what they will do about that but we expect that the bandwidth currently available won’t be large enough to hold the traffic.

Then again this 5G is expected to be wireless so it won’t exactly need a mobile coverage area to work. Think of it as how WiFi works these days.

The ‘Internet of Things’ is evolving, with almost any device you can think of being connected to the internet, the opportunities are endless for what things will be connected to the internet.

A world like what we see in sci-fi movies that maybe?  That’s what came to mind for me but let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) hasn’t even outlined the standards that 5G should go by so we have to give it time.
