Data Compression on Android and iOS

There has been an announcement on the Chrome blog that Google will soon be rolling out updates which will save mobile users money through data compression. This will also be coupled with a bandwidth management tool. With the new updates to the Chrome browser for PC, it is expected that Chrome mobile users would not be left behind. However, iOS fans need not despair as Google was generous enough to include changes to the iOS version of the Chrome mobile browser as well. Something that Android users are already well accustomed to is the function to translate pages easily which has now finally been shared with iOS. The other good news is that the new feature whose purpose is to save you money on data will be available on both Android and iOS.

Google claims that if you enable this service, it can “reduce data usage by up to 50%. Once the rollout is completed, you can start saving data and turn on an even more secure browsing experience, by visiting “Settings” > “Bandwidth management” > “Reduce data usage.” Then simply turn the toggle to “On.” From this menu, you’ll also be able to track how much bandwidth you save each month as you browse on Chrome.  According to the picture above for example, you use 185MB of data in one day, after data compression you actually will only have used 100MB of data. That makes the savings score in the 46% range. Pretty wicked, right? This feature also enables Chrome’s safe browsing technology which helps protect you from malicious webpages.

And finally, since we all know how valuable time is more than money, Google has added one new feature for Android users only. The application shortcuts will allow you to create shortcuts to your favourite websites right from your homescreen for faster and easier access to the web. When visiting a site you’d like to save, simply select “Add to homescreen” from the toolbar menu.

As the world continues to use phones and tablets more and more to access the web, Google seems to be a step ahead in prescribing the way we get on the internet. These new features mean that you get more access to the web without consuming much data. Consequently, being on the internet will be cheaper, thus more time can be spent on it. Inevitably, this will lead to a higher demand for smartphones as the ability to be online will be easily accessible. For instance, who would want to waste money SMSing when there is WhatsApp? Once you buy a bundle, you are sorted, with the likes of unlimited texting and sending multimedia messages- funny videos, beloved memes and of course indispensible selfies. The internet has got you covered! It couldn’t get any more exciting, considering that MTN Zambia has just successfully launched 4G LTE technology in the country.
