Who has the best Netflix deal in Zambia?

Let’s just say today’s social media we experienced the Netflix Wars between Liquid Telecom and MTN Zambia. Who won the war though? I can explain.

MTN announced a new promotion that comes with ‘free’ Netflix and yeah people will sign up but did YOU read the Ts & Cs? The ‘free’ Netflix is capped at between 150MB – 600MB daily! So say you get the bundle they’re selling that comes with the free service, you’ll only get to watch 150MB of Netflix content.

To get the free Netflix, subscribers must get a a 25GB MiFi bundle or starting from a 30GB Home bundle where they’ll also access Youtube, Snapchat, Facebook and WhatsApp for free. The daily limit is not per site, by the way, but for the total volume accessed by all the free extras. So if your daily cap is 150MB and you decide to stream YouTube videos only, you won’t be able to access Netflix because you’d have depleted your data. Here’s the breakdown:

Offer Type Offer Volume (MB) Price (K) Additional Bundle Benefit Usage Daily Limit on Extras (MB)
MiFi 7GB 7227 110 Facebook 59
MiFi 15GB 15460 220 WhatsApp, Facebook 100
MiFi 25GB 25750 380 WhatsApp, Facebook, Snapchat, Netflix 150
Home 15GB 15460 220 WhatsApp, Facebook 100
Home 30GB 30920 420 WhatsApp, Facebook, Snapchat, Netflix 200
Home 40GB 41260 600 WhatsApp, Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube, Netflix 300
Home 55GB 56720 750 WhatsApp, Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube, Netflix 400
Home 70GB 72180 1050 WhatsApp, Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube, Netflix 500
Home 120GB 123480 1400 WhatsApp, Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube, Netflix 600

They seem pretty confident with their service though, calling the blue company a buffering smurf:

To be fair, MTN Zambia called it FREE and not UNLIMITED access to the other services like Netflix.

Why is Liquid Telecom so loud? Because they offer actual unlimited Netflix packages along with their data bundles. So as long as the main bundle is active regards expiry/validity, you can watch all the Netfix you want with no daily caps. To access the free unlimited streaming on Netflix on Liquid Telecom you need to buy a package starting from 35GB bundle for K650:

Is it even more shade that the guy in Liquid Telecom’s marketing visual is a prominent ex-MTN employee, looking at a Y’ello laptop? They didn’t ‘give us‘ a chance to breathe!

Hold on while I make a play list…

Ok I’m back now.

Who else is offering Netflix as a free add-on?

The guys in green. Zamtel gives Netflix free and unlimited if you purchase data bundles starting from 50GB at K600:

Zamtel data packages

From what I have been told by a Zamtel employee, even if the main data bundle expires, the free access will still be available until the bundle is expected to expire. Say you have a monthly bundle but deplete the main bundle in 3 days, you will still be able to access the free unlimited add-ons until the month ends.

If were going to only consider real unlimited access, Liquid Telecom (Hai) and Zamtel have what you’re looking for, the quality of service on either is a topic for another day.

So, who do you have your data bundle money on?

Liquid all the way, one thing that was not mentioned is that with liquid once you purchase the 35GB bundle for k650.00 you also get another 35GB for free valid for a week and once your main bundle is replicated you can still enjoy all the free add ons of Netflix and others till the end of the month……. what more can I ask for aprat from the fact that liquid has got more productive and professional employees than zamtel according to my experience.

Been awhile riding with the techtrends, actually lost footing but am glad that am back.

  • 1st off beautiful piece, lord knows we need more day to day problem pieces that are well researched like this
That being said feel, while the service conditions may be set in varied T’s and C’s
There is a myriad of factors that beg a metion passed the ad wars and honourable mentions
latency, reliability, bandwidth (is it sub 3mbps or toping the 25mbps for hd quality visuals), coverage, ease of use, bandwidth & coverage (the quality of 4g if supported in the area or is it 3g?), the type of compression being used and the stability of the connection to the Netflix servers
are all matters I am sad to see you did not cover and hope against hope that you do in a later piece
All things considered I am well pleased at having the opportunity to read keep it up

    • Thanks a lot. All points taken into consideration. 🙂

  • Muhammad Fofana

  • it takes 1gig to watch an hour of netflix on a SD. So basically what mtn is saying your getting 15mintues of netflix a day…..it will take you years to finish Game of Thrones or Orange is a new black

  • Akufuna Simushi Jr

God bless tech trends Zambia….. very helpful information

  • Really well written piece there, thanks. I’ve just signed up for Netflix, using normal Zamtel data bundles on my iPad. It took me all of three episodes of Star Trek Discovery to know that this isn’t working out. I’ll try the Hai unlimited one, let’s see how it goes. Also, do you guys need writers? 😁☺️

    • Thank you MJ. We do accept free pieces from tech contributors yes!

  • excellent review.
