Visual Studio Code goes to v1.0 across the Windows, Linux and OSX plane

Microsoft’s at it again with its cross platform shenanigans.  Four days ago, they continued their announcement spree by announcing the eventual release of VS Code, which to those of you that love the sound of free comes with the tag line “Free. Open Source. Runs everywhere”.

According to Microsoft, over 2 Million developers around the world are currently using VSC since the release of the public preview. And here’s what they have to say about it: “What started as an experiment to build a production quality editor using modern web technologies has blossomed into a new kind of cross-platform development tool, one that focuses on core developer productivity by centering the product on rich code editing and debugging experiences. Visual Studio Code brings the industry-leading experiences of Visual Studio to a streamlined development workflow, that can be a core part of the tool set of every developer, building any kind of application.”

Initially confined to Web developers developing in JavaScript and TypeScript, VSC now supports every popular language thanks to Microsoft’s decision to open up some APIs allowing developers to develop plugins that extend its performance, as well as making the entire tool Open Source.  Binaries are currently available on GitHub.

Microsoft’s plan with VSC is to focus on performance, stability, accessibility and ensuring it remains compatible across all the currently supported platforms.  And that’s plausible, and you just have to love Microsoft’s relentless efforts to stick their fingers into every sphere of productivity out there.

If you’re an application developer developing for the web, mobile or working on OS specific applications, think about tapping in the functionality of VSC along with it’s over 1,000 extensions available on the Visual Studio marketplace. #ICTZM

  • If it is light weight as compared to the almighty VS IDE, then this might be a good idea…but the’re more awesome alternates to this, VS faithfuls might be the only ones using this.
