Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 goes “Lite”

We all love the feeling of acquiring a new catch. You get to see and find out what they’re all about, discover it. Here at TechTrends, we feel that way about technology. So when we were asked to review the Samsung Tab 3 Lite SM-T111 it was a tech-gasm. We couldn’t even wait to touch it, feel it, experience it and then tell you all about it.

Samsung has rolled out a new tablet targeted at the low-budget customer selling for just between $150 and $260 on most retail sites like Amazon but still with an aim of maintaining the standard that other tablets before it, like the Samsung Tab 3 7.0, and its much thinner too!

The Samsung Tab 3 Lite comes with a 7 inch screen of WSVGA resolution (1,024 x 600 pixels) so no, you won’t get to see pics in HD, ,making it just as good as P1000 which had the same specs.

It has a dual-core 1.2GHz processor so it’s faster than the older  7 inch Samsung Tab 3 which had a 1GHz Cortex A8 one.

It runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and we’re like, couldn’t they have done atleast even the Android 4.3 version? We already have Android 4.4 for Chrissakes! Anyway, it’s an upgrade from the Tab 3 7.0 which had the Android version 2.2 (Froyo), upgradable to version 2.3 (Gingerbread) OS (so ancient!)

8GB (you only get about 4.61 GB of actual available space) of internal storage and a 1GB RAM  is what you get with the Samsung Tab 3 Lite tablet, , and it has a SIM a microSD card slot so you can add up to 32GB extra space by buying a memory card. This is not as good as the Tab 3 which had a choice of 16 or 32 GB internal storage but a smaller 512 MB RAM.

The Tab 3 Lite kind of has a ‘safe’ feel in your hand with its textured back unlike the smooth one with the Tab 3 7.0. So atleast you don’t have to worry about it slipping. Just get a cover anyway. Just incase.

Now here is where it gets really bad. If you’re an avid video call type of person, you will be disappointed at the fact that unlike the original Tab 3s 1′.3MP one, the Tab 3 Lite has no front camera. AT ALL. So yes Skype is out unless you want to use its voice calling option only. The rear camera is also downgraded to 2MP without a flash, compared with the 3.15MP on the Tab 3 that has an LED flash.

In Zambia the Samsung Tab 3 Lite will cost you between K2400 and K3200. Should you get it? That’s all up to you really. We would stick to the Samsung Tab 3 7.0 because we have Skype video calls to make, and really it’s almost the same price. Don’t let the “Lite” of it fool you, the new tablet is actually heavier than its predecessor weighing in at 318 grams compared to 303 grams.

You can get a better tablet for around the same price.
